Artist Biogaphy
While growing up in the southwest David Haskell spent most of his time outdoors developing a deep appreciation for the beauty and variety of the western landscape. His family often vacationed in national parks, which further enhanced his early love of nature and lead to his interests in drawing and photography. Although he worked his way through college as an illustrator, he chose a career with the National Park Service, protecting and managing America’s national parks. He sculpted and painted occasionally on commission until he retired from the NPS in 1999. Since then he has been painting full time. David lives in northern Arizona where he is near his favorite painting locations. He teaches both studio and plein air workshops through the Sedona Arts Center and other regional institutions.
David is best known for his tranquil paintings of the Grand Canyon, Sedona and other magestic landscapes. However, he has a strong affinity for water and is increasingly found painting along streams, rivers and the seacoast. His paintings of the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon provide the best of both worlds, the magesty of the Grand Canyon and the tranquility and movement of water. In recognition of his exceptional ability to capture the moods and power of canyon country landscapes Dave has been selected to participate in a growing number of prestigious juried invitational shows and events such as the 2009 inaugural Grand Canyon Celebration of Art. He has been invited to participate in four of the past Sedona Plein Air Festivals and continues to lead an annual artist expedition down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.
His work is shown at the Sedona Arts Center where he is a faculty instructor, and the La Fuente Gallery in Sedona . In 2010 he opened his first Studio/gallery in Jerome, AZ. Visit the Canyon Fine Art portfolio for additonal information about the gallery.
